about

ars photographica

I’m not interested in facts. I’m interested in truth.

Art is how we talk to the gods.

In high school I was assigned “The Eve of St. Agnes” by John Keats and “The Lady of Shalott” by Lord Tennyson. So it began, this lifelong passion for the color, light and paralyzing beauty lurking in the darkness.

winterSmith Gallery haunts the borderlands between photography and digital fine arts, drawing inspiration from Impressionism, the Symbolist poets (as well as Modernists like Yeats, Eliot and Thomas), the glasswork of Dale Chihuly, Film Noir and a wide range of musical genres, including Dark Ambient, Industrial Metal, DarkWave/DarkBeat, ElectroPop, Shoegazer, Trip-Hop, Noise Rock and cinematic Indie.

The art expressed in these pages is heavily technological, with each piece born as a digital photograph and iterated repeatedly as it evolves through a workflow involving perhaps seven or eight software packages. Each instance presented here is one choice among seemingly infinite possibilities.

Sometimes I know what a work should be. Sometimes I wait for it to become what it wants.
